(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Two people are in custody after a high-speed chase through West Michigan, which involved one police officer being dragged and several other officers nearly being run off the road.It started Tuesday afternoon at the Target store on South Westnedge in Portage, continued on westbound I-94, and ended with a crash about a half-mile from the Indiana border.Portage Police tell Newschannel 3 that loss prevention at Target caught a woman using bogus credit cards to purchase gift cards, and then called police.The woman was taken into custody by loss prevention at Target.In the meantime, a Portage Police officer approached her accomplice--a man who was waiting in a Mercury Sable in the parking lot.Things escalated and the officer's life was put in danger."So he was next to the vehicle, had a hold of the driver, had a hold of the wheel, and tried to use repeated commands to stop the vehicle and so forth, the driver continued on and dragged him several feet. The officer was able to disengage fortunately," said Acting Portage Deputy Chief John Blue.The officer is expected to be okay.The driver then, took off on Westnedge and got onto I-94, where multiple police agencies--including the DNR--chased him, sometimes reaching 115 miles per hour.Police say at times, the suspect tried running cruisers off the road.However, the driver crashed near the Indiana border, and was taken into custody.Fortunately, no one was injured.Right now, police are trying to determine what charges the man may face--from credit card fraud to assault with intent to murder.
