Sign-ups for expanded Medicaid program begin

LANSING, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) Enrollment for the Healthy Michigan program opens Tuesday, in an effort to start signing people up for Medicaid.
In the first year, Healthy Michigan is expected to cover 320-thousand people and will eventually expand to nearly half a million.

In order to be eligible for enrollment, you must meet these requirements: be between the ages of 19 and 64, not pregnant, not currently eligible for Medicaid, not eligible for or currently enrolled in Medicare and earning up to 133-percent of the federal poverty level. (Thats nearly 16-thousand dollars a year for a single person and 33-thousand dollars a year for a family of four.)

If you are eligible, you'll have access to these essential health benefits: ambulances, emergency services, hospitalization, maternity and newborn care, mental health and substance abuse services, prescription drugs, rehabilitation, lab work, wellness programs and pediatric care.

Governor Rick Snyder says Healthy Michigan will help improve quality of life and save money for Michiganders long-term.

We have people in our family that needed help, that needed healthcare, Snyder says. There were 470-thousand people that were having to rely on the ER for their basic healthcare and we were paying for all those ER visits, all 10-million of us. This is a chance to do it more efficiently, thoughtfully.

If you are eligible for the program, you can now sign up online, by phone or by visiting your local DHS office.
