Large response in Kalamazoo as power pole burns above propane tanks

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Crews in Kalamazoo reacted to a potentially dangerous situation Monday afternoon around 3:00 pm.

High winds are believed to be responsible for a power pole that sheared off at the top. That pole caught fire over dozens of propane tanks at AmeriGas off of Kings Highway.

The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety sent out a full response of police and firefighters to ensure that the fire did not reach the propane tanks.

The fire on the pole burned itself off within 15 minutes, shortly after Consumers Energy arrived on scene to shut off power to the block.

Around 117 customers are currently without power in the area. Consumers Energy says power should be restored to those customers by midnight.
