Bar employee expected to be charged in Wayside fatal shooting

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A Kalamazoo bar employee is expected to be charged with murder in connection with the deadly shooting inside the Wayside West.

The suspect in the Wayside shooting is expected to be in court Friday afternoon to be charged with open murder.

That's when we're hoping to learn more about what led up to the deadly shooting inside the popular sports bar.

23-year-old Damian Tejada was shot and killed inside the crowded bar on Stadium Drive about a half hour before closing time Thursday morning.

Police say the young father got into a confrontation with a 23-year-old man who works at the bar before the employee pulled out a gun and shot him multiple times.

The suspect was arrested a short time later.

Less than 24-hour later, Wayside was back open Thursday night and many patrons tell us it was business as usual.

Many questions about the suspect remain. Was the gun registered, did he have alcohol in his system, and was he working at the time of the shooting?

"The question is if they know that he actually had it, that's the thing, he could have just brought it inside, the more important thing is why in the world did he do what he did," said bar customer Tracy Raber.

We are hoping to get some of those answers Friday.

The suspect will be in court at 1:30 Friday afternoon. We will be there and we will keep you updated.
