1/3 of breast cancer survivors unemployed after 4 years

(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Breast cancer survivors find themselves taking on a new battle: Unemployment.

A new study in the journal Cancer shows nearly one-third of women stay unemployed four years after treatment.

Previous studies showed the unemployment rate for breast cancer survivors was 20-percent.

The rate gets even higher for those who received chemotherapy.

Researchers say treatments force many women to miss work, which could be a contributing factor.

Doctors say they hope to change that statistic by identifying which patients may not necessarily need chemotherapy.
