Southwest Michigan Postcard Club holding expo

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) You have a chance to sift through more than a million postcards under one roof this weekend.

The Southwest Michigan Post Card Club will host its biannual Show and Sale on Saturday at the Kalamazoo County Expo Center.

The show is the largest, one-day club-sponsored postcard show in the country.

Crowds will find postcards from the late 1800s through the present, in every category imaginable.

The beauty of postcards is the entire history of the 20th century is in these boxes right here, says postcard collector and dealer, Wally Jung.

Jung, known as Postcard Wally, has been collecting for 22 years and has more than 100-thousand postcards in his inventory.

He is a member of the Southwest Michigan Post Card Club and is one of more than 30 dealers that will sell postcards at Saturdays expo.

These cards were the email or twitter of their day, little short messages, says Keith Howard, president of the Southwest Michigan Post Card Club. Its truly a snapshot of the past.

Howard says he enjoys seeing West Michigan milestones through the lens of a stranger and reading the handwritten notes they contain that detail our history.

He showed NewsChannel 3 several postcards from the early 1900s that document the burning of Burdick's Hotel in Kalamazoo and the beginning stages of building what is now Western Michigan University.

The great thing about a postcard is you can own a little piece of history, Howard adds. You can own something that perhaps is one-of-a-kind, maybe no other ones exist. It's a chance to see what was once there that is no longer there.

Jung adds, It's still as interesting today as when I first got into it and I still get this warm tingly feeling up my spine when I find the right card for somebody that I know they're going to love.

The Southwest Michigan Post Card Club meets four times a year at the Oshtemo branch of the Kalamazoo Public Library.

This weekends show runs from 10am to 5pm at the Kalamazoo County Expo Center.
