Mail carriers handing out bags for Stamp Out Hunger drive

WEST MICHIGAN (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Local mail carriers hope you will help them stamp out hunger again this year.

This week, they are delivering grocery bags along with the mail.

They ask that you put non-perishable food items in the bag and then place it by your mailbox.

On Saturday, they will pick up the goods and take them to local food banks.

Mail carriers say every year they are encouraged by the community's generosity.

"It's just a great feeling knowing people want to help. We're just the middle-men," said Battle Creek mail carrier Jim Carden. "People out there want to help people in their own community and that's their way of doing it."

This is the nation's largest single day food drive.

Last year, letter carriers across the U.S. collected more than 74 million pounds of food.
