U.S. House Majority Leader loses election

VIRGINIA (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - It's a huge upset in Washington politics as House Majority Leader Eric Cantor loses his republican primary election in Virginia.

Little known economics professor and Hope College graduate Dave Brat went home with the victory Tuesday night.

The defeat is a shock for Cantor's supporters as he outspent Brat 40 to one.

Cantor was up 34 points over Brat in a poll conducted just last month.

The stunning loss is a big victory for the Tea Party.

"Obviously we came up short," said Cantor.

"This is a miracle from god that just happened," said Brat.

Cantor's loss marks the first time in history a House Majority Leader has lost a primary.

Brat will face democrat Jack Trammell" this fall, who ironically is also a professor at the same college where brat teachers.
