Kalamazoo students' experiment to fly on ISS

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A group of Kalamazoo students is receiving an honor that's out of this world.

Four 8th grade students from St. Monica Catholic School just found out that an experiment they designed will be used by astronauts on board the International Space Station this fall.

The experiment is titled "Microgravity's Effects on Dry Lake Fairy Shrimp."

It will show what happens when they're hatched and developed in space.

The students' hypothesis is that the tiny sea creatures will develop less muscles mass and potential birth defects.

The girls experiment was one of 74 proposals submitted by the Catholic Diocese of Kalamazoo through the student spaceflight experiments program.
