The Kalamazoo Promise: By the Numbers

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - The Kalamazoo Promise has been around for 8 years now, available for students who attend Kalamazoo Public Schools.

The promise has given out more than $54 million in scholarships to nearly 3,300 students.

More than 1,300 students are in college right now, thanks to the program.

Enrollment was at its lowest in 20 years in 2005 before the announcement of the promise, and it's been on a steady upswing ever since.

Cities across the nation have been inspired to create similar opportunities for families.

Here in Michigan, 10 communities have been identified as Promise Zones, including Battle Creek and Muskegon.

All of them are committed to offering students a path to college through scholarships.

Kalamazoo is the only district offering full tuition to four-year colleges and universities.
