Homeland Security seizes fake hockey merchandise

DETROIT (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Homeland Security agents have seized more than $720,000 worth of counterfeit hockey merchandise and other sportswear during a three-month initiative leading up to NHL Winter Classic events.

Thursday, officials said jerseys, hats, T-shirts and other items worth more than $35,000 were seized in the Detroit area alone.

The makers use "inferior materials" for look-alikes that don't benefit the teams, players or associations with trademarked gear.

The NHL's Winter Classic between the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs was held Wednesday in Ann Arbor.
